Nofy i Androy (NiA)

Creating Leaders to Change Madagascar

Nofy i Androy (NiA) is a small Washington State 501(c)(3) dedicated to fighting gender inequality, child marriages, and early pregnancies by providing access to quality education for women and their families. We currently support 700 rural students who are all women from Madagascar, with the help of our 73 dedicated staff members on the ground and two volunteers running the organization out of sheer devotion to this mission.

The Androy region in southwestern Madagascar is one of the poorest regions in the world and suffers from periodic drought and famine. As a result of poverty and harmful cultural practices, the Androy region endures alarmingly high rates of child marriage and teenage pregnancies, causing many young women to drop out of school before realizing their potential.

What We Do

The Nofy i Androy program is designed to provide adolescent girls the life skills, body-awareness education, and financial support to remain in school, avoid early or forced marriages, and become confident change leaders. Students receive aid covering secondary school, university tuition & fees, school supplies, books, housing, and professional tutoring.

Studying for Success and Progress

In many rural families, sending a girl to school is a financial burden that can push them into early marriages as a quick fix for poverty. Our program lifts that burden by fully sponsoring girls and young women who are at risk of dropping out. We believe this is the key to breaking cycles of poverty and transforming communities in Madagascar.

Upcoming Fundraising Auction — March 22, 2025

We’re reaching out to request your support for our critical fundraising auction. This event will raise vital funds to ensure that our young girls and women—from 5th grade to graduate school—gain access to quality education.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, all donations to Nofy i Androy are tax-deductible. Your support would be invaluable in making a difference for 700 rural students in Madagascar.

At first, I almost couldn't make it into the program because Nofy i Androy is very strict about admitting only high-potential students. At that time, my GPA was six, and they emphasized not accepting bad performance. But I promised to give my best efforts, because I knew my parents couldn't afford my education if NiA didn't sponsor me. I worked harder, raised my grades, and today I’m a university student!

I used to be shy asking teachers questions in class, thinking classmates would laugh at me if I didn't understand. Then I realized we are all here to learn. NiA gave me the confidence to ask questions openly and to embrace curiosity.

My parents are farmers in a rural village, and I’m one of seven children. I’m the first—and only—child in my family who’s gone to school, because it’s so hard to afford tuition here. Thanks to NiA, I’m pursuing higher education and aiming to build a better future for my family and community.
