Nofy i Androy (“Dreams of Androy”)

Providing vulnerable girls and women access to quality education in Madagascar

At Nofy i Androy (NiA), we are dedicated to equipping young girls in Madagascar with the education, life skills, and financial support they need to fight against child marriage, early pregnancies, and gender inequality. Our program empowers girls to become confident leaders and change-makers in their communities, ensuring they can stay in school and pursue higher education.

We believe in redefining the role of women in Androy by providing them with the tools to create brighter futures through quality education, leadership training, sex education, and body-awareness education.

Our Impact

NiA has provided essential support to 700 rural girls in Madagascar, many of whom are the first in their families to receive an education. Through a combination of financial aid, secondary and university tuition coverage, and personalized tutoring, we are helping these young women stay in school, overcome obstacles, and prepare for future careers.

Our program not only provides academic support but also helps students develop leadership skills that will allow them to combat gender inequality in their communities.

“Thanks to NiA, I’m no longer afraid of my future. I have the chance to go to university and become a midwife. Without their support, I would have been married off and my dreams would have been impossible.”

— Vola Fagnampe

The Challenge

The Androy region of Madagascar, located in the deep south, suffers from extreme poverty, with many families relying on farming for their livelihood. Unfortunately, sending a girl to school is often seen as a financial burden, leading to child marriages as a solution to ease the family’s financial struggles.

Girls as young as 9 years old are sold into marriage with much older men, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. Once married, these girls face early pregnancies, the discontinuation of their education, and long-term health risks. In this region, it is common for parents to build a small hut for their daughter to signify that she is ready for marriage—further perpetuating the cycle of gender inequality and early forced marriages.

Our Approach

NiA works tirelessly to break the cycle of poverty and gender inequality by providing life skills, body-awareness education, and financial support to adolescent girls who are at risk of early marriage and dropping out of school. By fully sponsoring girls’ education—including secondary school, university tuition, housing, school supplies, and books—we ensure that financial barriers do not prevent these girls from realizing their potential.

In addition to providing academic support, we offer professional tutoring to help our students improve their grades and prepare for competitive national exams. Through extracurricular workshops and leadership training, our students gain the skills and confidence needed to become leaders in their communities and challenge harmful cultural norms.

Long-Term Impact

NiA is transforming the future of 700 rural girls in Madagascar by providing them with secondary education and the opportunity to attend university—something that would otherwise be out of reach for many of them. Our program not only educates these girls but also provides them with internships, career mentorship, and the leadership skills they need to thrive in the workforce.

By sponsoring first-generation students, we are fostering a generation of women who will serve as role models and champions for gender equality. Our long-term goal is to create a ripple effect where each educated girl becomes a force for change in her community—helping to combat early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and gender discrimination.

Get Involved

NiA’s mission to fight for the rights of girls and women in Madagascar is only possible with the support of our partners and donors. Success Stories

Here is Annick, a young mom who filled out the Nofy i Androy scholarship form last year.

Her dream is to finish college. We granted her with annual tuition and school supplies. Annick is a Sophomore at CURA (Androy University).

Vision for the Future

As we look ahead, NiA is committed to expanding our impact and providing education to even more young women in the Androy region. By 2026, we aim to support 800 girls, ensuring they continue to receive the life skills, education, and resources needed to overcome the challenges of early marriage and poverty.

We plan to partner with local organizations to offer internship opportunities that will help prepare NiA members for their future careers. NiA is also dedicated to creating employment opportunities for local Malagasy professionals, who will play a vital role in supporting and mentoring our students. By investing in the education of young women, we are not only transforming their lives but also contributing to the long-term development and prosperity of their communities.

Girls’ Leadership Summit: An annual event that empowers young women by developing their leadership skills and fostering a sense of community among peers.

Pedagogical Training for Teachers: We offer specialized training to educators in Madagascar, enhancing their teaching methods to better support female students.

We collaborate with local organizations to provide internship opportunities, allowing students to gain practical experience and prepare for their future careers.

Career Development Program

This program offers mentorship, career counseling, and skill-building workshops to help young women navigate their professional paths and achieve their career goals.

Entrepreneurship Program

Emergency Food Program

In response to Madagascar's high poverty rates—where over 80% of the population lives below the poverty line (worldbank.org)—we provide emergency food assistance during extreme droughts and famines. This support helps meet the nutritional needs of our students, their families, and the low-income community in Androy.

University Program

We support students in pursuing higher education by covering university tuition and fees, ensuring they have the opportunity to attain advanced degrees.

Community Education Program

In partnership with local partners, stakeholders, and authorities, we focus on educating low-barrier communities about gender-based violence, women's and children's rights, sexual & reproductive health rights, positive masculinity, climate change, and the importance of remaining in school—aiming to foster a more informed and equitable society.

These activities take place in our classrooms and in remote villages.

Empowered Journeys

Tantely

At first, I almost couldn’t make it into the program because Nofy i Androy is very strict about admitting only high-potential students. At that time, my GPA was six, and they emphasized not accepting bad performance. But I promised to give my best efforts, because I knew my parents couldn’t afford my education if NiA didn’t sponsor me. I worked harder, raised my grades, and today I’m a university student!

Anilah

I used to be shy asking teachers questions in class, thinking classmates would laugh at me if I didn’t understand. Then I realized we are all here to learn. NiA gave me the confidence to ask questions openly and to embrace curiosity.

Miza

My parents are farmers in a rural village, and I’m one of seven children. I’m the first—and only—child in my family who’s gone to school, because it’s so hard to afford tuition here. Thanks to NiA, I’m pursuing higher education and aiming to build a better future for my family and community.
